The heroes of the Independence struggle seem all but forgotten.
BELGAUM: The heroes of the Independence struggle seem all but forgotten. The Martyrs' Memorial (Hutatma Smarak) at Hutatma Circle in erected memory of those who laid down their lives during the freedom struggle has been lying neglected for decades. Business est ablishments have surrounded the memorial from two sides while the third side has been occupied for an autorickshaw stand.
Despite being in the heart of the city, the condition of the memorial has deteriorated to such an extent that the National Tricolour painted on it has begun to disappear.
The junction is the centre of various activities held in the city. The Ganesha idol immersion procession takes off from this circle annually and the Rajyotsava procession, Shivajayanti procession and various other programmes also start here. Yet no one has noticed the condition of the martyrs' memorial. Various political parties, particularly the BJP, which is now partner in the ruling coalition, launch their programmes at this circle and also stage protests here. Businessmen whose shops and other establishments surround the memorial do not remember the last time it was given a facelift. "The arena is never cleaned.Auto drivers are always sitting there, that's all we know. We are not aware what is inscribed on it", said one shopkeeper.
Many government officials in the city think that it's a memorial of the MES and their apathy has resulted in the memorial being neglected for long. The memorial is situated in the jurisdiction of the Belgaum City Corporation, but the civic body has not cared to maintain it. Sources in the civic body said even they don't know when it was painted the last time. BCC commissioner M S Channappagowdar expressed ignorance about the state of the Martyrs' Memorial. After it was brought to his notice that it is a memorial erected in the memory of freedom fighters, he promised to personally look into the matter.
